The Woodstock Curling Club was formed in January 2008 by a group of friends in Woodstock, VT who were intrigued by the sport that has been called “chess on ice” due to the strategy and teamwork involved.
With the support of the Union Area in Woodstock and one set of donated curling stones and two rented sets, the club began curling on Friday nights, learning the sport as they went along. Since then, the club has grown. They have held numerous “Learn to Curl” sessions and hosted very successful tournaments, called bonspiels, in 2010 and again in 2012 to crown the year’s arena club champion of the Grand National Curling Club (an association of curling clubs throughout the eastern United States).
Woodstock Curling Club members have continued to promote the sport throughout the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. Club members have taken training classes to learn to become certified instructors, have attended training camps to grow their own skills, and teams from the club compete in bonspiels around New England.
In 2012, the Woodstock Curling Club recognized that they had grown to include members from towns throughout the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. As such, the club is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit under the name Upper Valley Curling.
The Woodstock Curling Club members range in age from teens to 70-plus and cover a wide range of professions and backgrounds. Some members would consider themselves athletic. For others, curling is their first real team sport. Although the skills involved take some practice, the game is easily learned at any age.
