Ice Sports University at Lake Morey

We had an amazing weekend with lots of press for curling and our curling club. Todd Allen got to call into WTPL 107.7 friday afternoon and chat with Bob Lipman and Bob Lobell about curling with the upcoming Winter Olympics.

The Woodstock Curling Club was invited to be a part of Lake Morey’s Ice Sports University weekend. Guests enrolled at Ice Sports University for the weekend of January, 24th 2014 and earned their “diploma” in the following “majors”: Pond Hockey, Curling, Ice Fishing or Nordic Skating and “minor” in Snow Shoeing, and Cross Country Skiing. While Dave Dugdale, Paula Flanders and Peter LaBelle were setting equipment up friday, Jack Thurston from WPTZ channel 5 interviewed and filmed the group. See the great clip here:

Several members from the WCC were Professors and Assistant Professors as they taught guests who signed up for a 1 hour Learn to Curl session. It was a very successful day with 3 1-hour sessions with 20 guests each time. Learning on pond ice was very different than arena ice but guests were enthusiastic and loved the experience of delivering and sweeping stones. For the final “exam” we had 16 guests sign up for a 1 hour game with snow falling quickly. Professors assisted teams with skipping advice while Assistant Professors were busy clearing snow off the surface! Here are some pictures from yesterday’s event:

Lake Morey Pondspiel Registration is Full

Our first annual Pondspiel at Lake Morey Resort is taking shape and is 4 weeks away (Feb 14 – Feb16). We have 16 teams from all over New England registered (registration is full and now closed). It should be a great time with the rest of the Winter Activities happening at the resort. All we need is the weather to keep cold for the ice to continue building after that warm spell last week. Come and check out what curling looks like on pond ice.
