Veterans Learn Curling in White River Junction

On Saturday, October 28th Upper Valley Curling and Cape Cod Curling in collaboration with Recreation Therapy at White River Junction VAMC and the Town of Hartford provided a learn to adaptive curl opportunity for many of our local Veterans and community members at Barwood Arena. Tony Colacchio is a National Assistant Coach for Paralympic Curling and a member of the Cape Cod Curling Club; he provided the instruction alongside Paralympian Meghan Lino, for this unique event.

The goal of offering adaptive sport opportunities is to provide another pathway for our nation’s heroes to find relief from their stresses in civilian life as well as shedding light onto the possibilities for those in wheelchairs, with physical disabilities, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Learning new skills with peers help our Veterans find a sense of comradery, which they often miss since their service in the military.

The next clinic will be held November 7th from 9:00-11:00 at Barwood Arena. Please reach out to Jennifer Stark, Recreation Therapy at White River Junction VAMC ext. 4694 to sign up for this clinic.

Full house in Hartford

Another busy Saturday night at the Wendell A. Barwood Arena in Hartford, Vermont. We had two sheets of league play and two sheets of Learn To Curl instruction.

This fall has been a busy time for the club, as we began playing in two arenas– Saturday nights in Hartford, and Sunday nights at the Union Arena in Woodstock, Vermont. Both locations hosted Learn to Curlers this season, giving club members the opportunity to share our love of the sport with new players. In Hartford we launched a new program, Curling University, where Learn to Curl graduates who weren’t ready to jump right into league play could return for additional instruction and practice.

Our winter season starts January 7th and ends on March 12th. We’ll be curling on Saturdays at the Barwood Arena in Hartford, Vermont from 5:30PM to 8PM, and on Sundays at the Union Arena in Woodstock, Vermont from 6:30PM to 9PM. League and social players can choose the night and location that’s most convenient for them.

Later this month we’ll announce our January Learn To Curl dates. For all our latest news, follow us on Facebook (UpperValleyCurling) or Twitter (@uvcurling).

Happy Holidays!
